Photonics/Optics - Understanding the Latest Applications of Light-based Technologies in Medical, Consumer, Industrial, and Defense Sectors

Whether for treating disease, advancing solar energy cells or enhancing semiconductor performance, recent advances in photonics and optics have created myriad opportunities for entrepreneurs to break new ground across a tremendously wide spectrum of commercial activity. As ever, the Greater Boston area’s potent mix of university resources and entrepreneurial culture have made our region a leader in a new and constantly evolving technological field. The May 19th EntreTech Forum will bring together some of the regions educators, researchers and entrepreneurs to focus on this academic/commercial nexus of innovation, and to answer key questions around (i) understanding the local resource base for photonics-based innovation (ii) distilling the key drivers that define success or failure for early-stage research-driven photonics entrepreneurs and (iii) defining for the audience what the next great ideas in photonics/optics technology will look like.

Moderator:

Andrew Fairbairn, Managing Principal, Fairbairn Ventures

Mr. Fairbairn partners with driven entrepreneurs to rapidly prove out value propositions and to build solid businesses. Prior to establishing Fairbairn Ventures, Mr. Fairbairn was a founding partner of JVKellyGroup, Inc. (JVKG), a New York-based management consulting, performance management and software development firm. He has also served as Vice President of Deutsche Bank, focused on corporate venturing in financial technology companies and strategic planning roles in New York and London. Mr. Fairbairn began his career with UBS Securities in New York, where he worked on global telecommunications industry financings, across a range of geographies and investment banking product disciplines.

Mr. Fairbairn earned his B.A. in Economics and M.A. in International Development Policy from Stanford University.

Panelists:

Jonathan Rosen, Executive Director, Institute for Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization, BU School of Management

Dr. Rosen has participated in medical product development programs in large corporations, new ventures, and academic translational research centers for more than 30 years. Dr. Rosen is presently Executive Director of BU’s ITEC program, which offers a new cross-disciplinary model for entrepreneurial research, education and commercialization. ITEC is housed at the BU School of Management, with much of the institute’s work oriented around activity at the BU Photonics center. ITEC promotes cross campus exchange among students, faculty and alumni across all 17 schools and colleges at the university. Mr. Rosen will share his experiences in facilitating/stimulating entrepreneurship in photonics/optics and related fields at the university level. Dr. Rosen is also affiliated with Center for Integration of Medicine & Innovative Technology (CIMIT) as Senior Advisor to the Director, remaining closely involved in the ongoing development of technology implementation pathways and in documenting metrics of facilitation. Until October 2006, Dr. Rosen directed the CIMIT Office of Technology Implementation, which works with investigators, licensing offices and the investor community to design and implement new models for improving patient care by partnering innovative new medical technologies with product development environments.

Stephen Saylor, President & CEO, SiOnyx

Mr. Saylor’s career spans over 20 years of emerging technology development and commercialization. Prior to joining SiOnyx, Mr. Saylor served as a Vice President of Product Management and Product Marketing for Adobe Systems where he managed Adobe’s award winning digital video product line. Mr. Saylor joined Adobe from FlashPoint Technology, a digital imaging company he co-founded with a team from Apple Computer and built into one of the most prolific licensing firms serving the consumer digital photography industry. Mr. Saylor’s early career includes a variety of technology management, marketing and engineering roles with Apple, Polaroid and Technicare Corporation.

Mr. Saylor holds a BSEE from Northeastern University.

George Tegos, Instructor in Medicine (Harvard Medical School), Assistant Microbiologist (MGH),  Wellman Center for Photomedicine

Mr. Tegos is an accomplished researcher in photonics-based medical applications, with extensive collaborative experience at leading universities and research centers globally. His current research at Massachusetts General Hospital is mainly oriented towards developing novel photochemotherapeutic systems for model infectious diseases. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy research has increased in the last 20 years because of concerns resulting from the ever-increasing occurrence of multi antibiotic-resistance. Mr. Tegos’ research is building on laboratory results showing that microbial cells, treated with non-toxic photosensitizers (PS) can successfully be killed by harmless visible light, opening new doors for potentially valuable new anti-microbial treatments.

Mr. Tegos received his BS in Biology from University of Athens, Greece, and his PhD in Microbiology from University of Ioannina, Greece. He has been a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Molecular Microbiology Biology Department at Northeastern University.
